MarketWharf launched a global competition, in which artists and architects vied for the opportunity to create public art for the passage that runs within Market Wharf from Market Street to Jarvis Street. Below is the new rendering for Market Wharf’s public artwork, courtesy of the winning design by Paul Raff Studio.

This passage is intended to transport pedestrians and cyclists through the block from street to street, and to house bicycle and automobile parking for the retail shops contained within Market Wharf. The competition’s goal was to animate and enhance the passage, rather than leave it as a purely functional and dark space.

Paul Raff Studio describes the art as follows:

“Until about 90 years ago, Lake Ontario rolled over the site of Market Wharf. At approximately the level of the ceiling of the new public passageway, the lake’s surface glittered and heaved for those many millennia. A lake’s surface fascinates with its universally appealing beauty. Imagine you could see the lake’s surface frozen in static, sculptural form. Imagine you could walk underneath and experience it. This is Market Wharf’s future public artwork by Paul Raff Studio.”

What do you think of the renderings? Is public artwork a great way to transform otherwise dull, eye sore spaces into agreeable and functional public spots?

The Market Wharf residences are almost complete! It’s impressive how much work has gone into building the condos, and even more impressive how little there is left to be done! Up to the 21st floor, units are almost move-in ready! Only the higher floors and penthouses have yet to be completed. Elevators have even been installed and are working. Occupancy has already started for a few units!

Here are some pictures so that you can get at what’s going on inside:

The lobby has a couple more things to be done, but it’s almost there!

Although it may not look like the luxuriousness you’d be expecting yet, here’s a picture inside one of the penthouse suites!

Look at that view!

Less attractive view inside, but upon completion, it will be luxurious and classy, it is the penthouse after all!

Another view that can’t be beat!

This shows the view from a 2 bedroom corner unit on the 27th floor, facing southeast.

Above is a picture from one of the almost complete units on the 21st floor.

Hardwood flooring throughout, wall to floor ceilings with a great view.

Carpeting and final appliances will be the next installation. Utilities are mostly in place by now, save for light switches. Cabinetry and flooring obviously remain to be finished on top floors.

Market Wharf is located only steps from the historic St. Lawrence Market. To learn more about the building, including amenities, construction and design, go to www.marketwharf.com.

Context Development’s Market Wharf tower, a recentaddition to the St. Lawrence neighbourhood has reached a significant chapter in its construction. The enormous white and orange crane that had perched atop the condo building’s 33-storey roof has been removed. This signals the end to the heavy construction phase of the tower’s development and moves the process a major step toward welcoming its new residents.

In this view of the building, the red crane that can be seen in front of the building was used to take down the crane that had been stationed on Market Wharf’s roof.

The street-level retailers of the building are already occupied and the Shopper’s Drug Mart on the north end of the building’s podium has been open for business for some time.

Here is the building, with the Shopper’s Drug Mart on the corner, before the removal of the rooftop crane.

As can be seen from shots of the building, its most striking design features are the balcony configurations of each façade. The east and west flanks create visual interest in their rippling wave-like balconies. By contrast, the north and south-facing balconies are more angular, assymmetrically arranged. They are made distinct by their off-center placement, creating a zigzag line that snakes up and down the building.

It is clear that Market Wharf’s architects took design inspiration from its waterfront location. The lines on each façade reflect the fluid and angular patterns of undulating waves. The nearby St. Lawrence Market is referenced by the brick and brown tones chosen for the building’s street level.

Market Wharf is joining various other recent St. Lawrence residential developments such as the L Tower and The Berczy, and its striking height makes a significant mark on the city skyline. With significant progress in the building’s construction, Market Wharf’s development moves closer to being move-in ready for new residents of the lower St. Lawrence area.
